Incunable- June 28, 1492. 2 (of 3) parts in 1 vol. Part 1 & Part 3 only. Folio, contemporary blindstamped pigskin over bds, clasps [one separated but present]; worn. 342 leaves. 55 lines. 301 x 209 mm - sheet size. Rubricated throughout. Small punctures on 1/2 title and first leaf, ink library stamp to margin of a1 & Gii, occasional marginalia. Scattered minor discoloration and dust-soiling, other contemporary markings. Early ink inscription at head of title page. Goff F-134 - recording 7 copies; BMC II, 435 (IB 7427-9). First tp- "Sermones sancti Vincentii fratris ordinis predicatorum de te[m]pore pars Hyemalis." Second tp "Sermones sancti Vincentii de valentía fratris diui ordinis predicatorum de sanctis." All in all a rather exceptional copy. AUTHOR BIO-" Famous Dominican missionary, born at Valencia, 23 January, 1350; died at Vannes, Brittany, 5April, 1419...A brother, not unknown to history, was Boniface Ferrer, General ofthe Carthusians, who was employed by the antipope Benedict XIII in important diplomaticmissions. Vincent was educated at Valencia, and completed his philosophy at the age of four...In 1370 he taught philosophy at Lerida; one of his pupils there was Pierre Fouloup, later Grand Inquisitor of Aragon...At Salamanca Queen Yolanda ofAragon chose him for her confessor, 1391-5....he was cited before the Inquisiton forpreaching publicly "the Judas had done penance", but Pedro de Luna, recently raised to the papalchair as Benedict XIII, cited the case before his tribunal and burned the papers. Benedict then calledhim to Avignon and appointed him confessor and Apostolic penitentiary...attack of fever ...brought Vincent to death's door, but during anapparition of Christ accompanied by St. Dominic and St. Francis he was miraculously cured...between Gregory XII and Benedict XIII in the hope of putting an end to the schism. Vincent againurged Benedict to have pity on the afflicted Church, but in vain... Printed on cheap paper, with browning and brittleness. Approximately 300 isues held in labeled sturdy green cloth slip cases. Not collated. Condition is very fragile in about the 40% consisting largely of later issues. So 40% poor to fair, 60% good to very good. Earlier issues are generally good. Even single issues occur infrequently, but a run of these is most unusual.. Articles mainly of a political nature- Germans release Jews from prisons to make room for new ones, France- the new Monarchy, etc. Shipping weight close to 70 pounds. Please do not ask about specific issues, I am selling this dirt cheap to avoid all that work. 200.00
