<http://www.kirksbooks.com/bookdetails.asp?bkid=446627> HISTORIC DECORATIONS
AT THE PAN-PRESBYTERIAN COUNCIL: a Lithographic Souvenir
Publisher: The Presbyterian Publishing Company Philadelphia 1880. Stiff
brown paper boards with black cloth binding tape. 21 pages plus 10 gorgeous
chromo-lithographed plates on heavy stock. The plates depict the
"Ecclesiastical seals, symbols, coats-of-arms, flags, banners, devices,
mottoes, and historic illustrations used in the decorations of the
Horticultural Hall, at the Second Council of the Alliance of the Reformed
Churches holding the Presbyterian System, held in Philadelphia, A.D. 1880."
Publication may have been a year or two later, pub. date is approximate.
Quite a story about the effort to put together these decorations - many
devices had been neglected or forgotten over the years. And quite another
story about attempting to record them. Photography was not up to the job and
they had to be redone in this incredibly chromo-lithography with its
intense, brilliant colors. There are "decorations" here for Scotland,
Ireland, England & Wales, Holland, Germany, Italy, France (Huguenots),
Switzerland, Hungary, and Bohemia & Moravia. England's device includes the
motto, "2000 Non-Conforming Presbyterian Divines." Holland proclaims "100,
000 Martyrs." Needless to say these represent years of trials and oppression
for the reformed churches. This is a scarce title, other copies exist in
cloth bindings but this plain board cover appears to be original. Perhaps it
was an "economy" version, or perhaps copies were issued in this format so
that they could be bound according to the desires of the owner (a not
uncommon practice at the time). Hinge paper cracked (hinges intact) some
wear to covers and some aging to page edges, previous dealer's notations in
pencil on front free endpaper, otherwise good, clean condition, with
splendid plates. First Edition Paperbound Good 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
