Aubin-Louis Millin, ed.: Magasin Encyclopedique, ou Journal des Sciences, des Lettres et des Arts. Paris: Chez Fuchs, 1797-1803. Eleven volumes; 8vo in original publisher's boards; ca. 576 pp. each; some with engraved folding plates.

Eleven volumes, a non-consecutive run, of this Napoleonic-era journal of the sciences, arts and letters. Subjects include Mathematics, Chemistry, Botany, Medicine, Politics, Travels, History, Literature, Archaeology etc., plus poetry, correspondence, book and theatre reviews, etc., etc.; these volumes with significant articles on Napoleon as First Consul; the Anatomy of Mammifers; Palaeography; the Oneida Indians of Pennsylvania; Mozart; Oriental Geography of Ebn-Haukal; De Parron's Oupnek'hat; Vaccination/inoculation; Consular diptychs; etc., etc, etc.

Bindings worn, rubbed and chipped, hinges cracked, several boards detached; early ink stamps of the British Legation, Tehran (Persia); some volumes with the ownership signature and armorial bookplate of Sir Gore Ouseley (1770-1844), linguist, orientalist and diplomat, who served as British ambassador to Persia (the first since Charles I's reign) from 1810-1814; contents generally quite clean and sound.
