(BREMER PRESS) Vesalius, Andreas. ICONES ANATOMICA [With all the Figures Used to Illustrate the Anatomical Works of Vesalius]. (New York and Munich: The Bremer Press) for the New York Academy of Medicine & the Library of the University of Munich. 1934. Large folio. (10),130,xiii,(5)pp., plus 94 unpaginated leaves of plates. Profusely illustrated with woodcuts, some full page and some folded, of which 227 of the illustrations were printed directly from the original 16th century woodblocks. Edition limited to 615 copies. Original binding by Frieda Thiersch of half white pigskin, raised bands, with leather label, over gray boards. A fine copy of this beautiful book. $7,500.00 (trade discount allowed)
In effect, a finely printed facsimile of the 1543 first edition of the FABRICA with some additions from the 1555 second edition and the 1543 EPITOME. The Bremer Press Vesalius was the last book to be printed by this distinguished German private press. It is particularly notable for the re-use of the original 16th. century woodblocks. All of these original woodblocks were later destroyed in the bombing of Munich in 1943.
