Charles Smith: Tracts on the Corn-Trade and Corn-Laws. A new edition. With Additions from the marginal Manuscripts of Mr. Catherwood. To which is now added A Supplement of Interesting Pieces on the Same Subject. With some account of the Life of Mr. Smith. London: Printed for John Stockdale, 1804. First edition thus. Early/period half calf and marbled boards, rebacked with the original spine laid down; 8vo; 323, [iii]-54 pp.

A revised and much expanded edition of Smith's Three Tracts, first published in 1766. With numerous tables and charts. An important work that influenced Adam Smith and others. "These tracts are by far the best of the earlier works on the corn trade. They embody much valuable information respecting the corn laws of England and other countries, especially France; the prices, imports and exports of corn; the sums paid in bounties on exportation; the numbers of the people using different sorts of corn, and the quantity used by each, &c." (McCulloch). Binding with rubbing and wear to the corners and edges; front and rear joints professionally repaired/reinforced; light toning to the leaves, a few small spots of soiling; otherwise clean and sound, firmly bound. A few marginal notes by the early/original owner, who has also annotated the front free-endpaper in an elegant copperplate hand. Two related, early nineteenth-century newspaper clippings loosely laid in.
