[Thomas Rowlandson (illustrator); William Combe:] The Tour of Doctor Syntax, in Search of the Picturesque. London: R. Ackermann, 1813 [but ca. 1815]. Engraved hand-colored title and 30 hand-colored plates, including the frontispiece. [TOGETHER WITH:] The Second Tour of Doctor Syntax, in Search of Consolation. London: R. Ackermann, 1820. Twenty-four hand-colored plates, including the frontis. Two volumes, 8vo (23.5 cm), uniformly bound in elaborately gilt-tooled polished calf by Riviere & Son. The first edition of the second tour (second state of plate 22) and an early printing of the first tour (third edition stated on the engraved title and advertisement, sixth edition stated on the first page of the text; plates dated 1815).

The first two satirical tours of Doctor Syntax (a third was published in 1821), one of the great color-plate works and a true publishing sensation, going into countless reprints and inspiring numerous imitations and piracies throughout the nineteenth century. A handsome set, complete with all the plates (one plate bound out of order in vol. II). Modest wear and scuffs to the bindings, shallow wear to the spine ends, joints professionally repaired/restored; some toning to the contents, a few occasional small spots, but generally very clean and fresh. Both volumes housed in a utilitarian modern custom-made velvet slipcase.
