Michel Eugene Chevreul: Recherches Chimiques sur les corps gras d'origine animale. Paris: chez F. G. Levrault, 1823. FIRST EDITION. Early/contemporary boards and leather spine and corners; 8vo; 8, [6], xvi, 484, [2] pp. With the half-title, publisher's ads (bound in front), errata leaf, engraved plate and two (of three) folding tables; numerous in-text tables.

First edition of this landmark treatise (roughly translated, Chemical Researches on Oils of Fats of Animal Origin), the chef d'oeuvre of Michel Chevreul (1786-1889), a celebrated chemist known for his work in fats and fatty acids. He is credited with discovering margaric acid and an early form of soap derived from animal fats. He later did pioneering work in gerontology, a field he came to know well, as he lived to the age of 102.

Lacking the second folding table (though the first table is present in duplicate). Light rubbing to the boards, wear to the edges; spine leather rubbed and chipped, front hinge cracked but secure; previous owner's signature to the front flyleaf, scattered light foxing throughout, a bit more pronounced on a few leaves; several leaves bumped/creased at the corners; otherwise clean and sound, firmly bound.
