Edward Forster: The British Gallery of Engravings, from Pictures of the Italian, Flemish, Dutch and English Schools, now in the Possession of the King, and Several Noblemen and Gentlemen of the United Kingdoms: With some Account of each Picture. London: William Miller, 1807. FIRST EDITION. Elephant folio (48.5 x 34 cm; 19 x 13.5 in.) bound in forest-green straight grain morocco decorated in gilt.

Complete with fifty-two fine engravings by Schiavonetti, Sharp, James and Charles Heath and others, each accompanied by explanatory text in English and French. Artists whose works are reproduced include Joshua Reynolds, Veronese, Velasquez, Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dyke, Murillo, Poussin, etc. Once noble binding is now rather worn, with bumping to the corners and rubbing and scuffing to the boards; the front board is detached and shows evidence of cellophane tape repairs; endpapers are creased; text leaves with offsetting/browning from the plates; the plates with scattered foxing, generally mild and relegated to the margins; the exquisite engravings themselves are crisp and vivid. Front paste-down with the bookplate of Albert May Todd (1850-1931), the "Peppermint King," a major collector of books and art who established the A.M. Todd Rare Book Room at the Upjohn Library of Kalamazoo College (Michigan).
