Victorian Promotional Handbill for Jennison's Patent Diaphragm Portable
Water Filters.

Boston; Thacher Beal: no date, but 1846-1850.

A fascinating handbill issued by the Boston-based New England distributor
of a reusable filter "for purifying water and other liquids while under
pressure". The device had won a gold medal at the American Institute's
1845 Fair, and another for an improved version in 1846. The illustration,
drawn from one of Dyonisius Lardner's book, shows "Correct Drawings of the
Living Animalcules contained in River Water". Much of America's
Victorian-era drinking water was certainly a filthy disgrace, and the
folks at Jennison's made brilliant use of a dramatic illustration to drive
the point home.

Single sheet. 6"x9.75". Minor soil, tip chip. [39692] $150
