Four Early Books on Epitaphs & Gravestone Inscriptions

DISCUSSION: Four early 19th century English epitaph collections are here
bound into a single volume. The four titles are-

"A Select Collection of Epitaphs and Monumental Inscriptions, with
Anecdotes of Distinguished Extraordinary Persons Epitaphs" -No author
stated, published in Ipswich by J.Raw in 1806. xv + 230 pages + engraved
frontispiece.

"Church=Yard Gleanings, and Epigrammatic Scraps: being a collection of
remarkable Epitaphs and Epigrams..." by William Pulleyn, published in
London in 1830. xxiii + 264 pages.

"[Epitaphia], or, A collection of memorials, inscribed to the memory of
good and faithful servants, copied on the spot, in various cemetaries
throughout the counties of Berks, Buckingham, (etc)." by J.W. Streeten,
published in London in 1826. xii + 312 pages.

"Church-yard Gleanings, or, A Collection of Epitaphs and Monumental
Inscriptions" -No author stated, published in Derby, no date, but around
1840. 24 pages + folding colored frontispiece. This has a nice folding
frontispiece showing a churchyard, although it is somewhat strongly
(though not unpleasantly) colored, and in trimming the pages to make them
fit into the binding with the rest of the books, the edges have been
trimmed right up to, and in some cases into the text (in these case
nicking off small parts of the outermost letters -see the last photo,
below).

DESCRIPTION: The four titles are all bound as one in 19th century plain
quarter leather with marbled boards. The volume measures 4"x6.5".

CONDITION NOTES: Covers somewhat worn and rubbed; spine head chipped at
one corner; a little internal soil and spotting. Last title trimmed too
closely with some text loss (as noted above).

PRICE: $250 -
