Wilson, Amos. THE PENNSYLVANIA HERMIT. A Narrative of the Extraordinary
Life of Amos Wilson. Who expired in a cave, in the neighborhood of
Harrisburgh, Pennsylvania, after having therein lived, in solitary
retirement, for nineteen years, in consequence of the ignominious death of
his sister. Annexed is the writings of Wilson while a recluse, and his
reasons for preferring a state of solitude to that of the society of his
fellow-beings. Philadelphia: s.n., 1839. Second printing. 48pp. "The Sweets
of Solitude," first published at Baltimore in 1821 [36pp with portrait],
begins on page 24 of this edition. Early woman's signature top of
title-page. In the original, plain brown wrappers, sewn.  6" x 3.75" Very
Good. Topics in this little work include unmarried mothers, infanticide,
execution, hermitage, &c.

include the portrait noted by Howes, with no evidence that it ever was
present. It does contain 48 pages, which is 24 more than called for by
