TITLE: “Monumenta; or, Designs for Tombs, Wall Monuments, Head-Stones,
Grave Crosses, &c. with working details”

Published in London by J. Hagger. Not dated, but 1867.

DISCUSSION: A wonderful Victorian collection of designs for tombs,
monuments and head-stones in the Gothic Revival and other Victorian
revival styles. The plates are divided into sections- Coped Stones – Grave
Crosses – Head-Stones – High Tombs – Designs for Sepulchral Monuments,
Italian Monument, Italian Cenotaph – Monumental Crosses – Wall Monuments –
Emblems – Inscriptive Lettering – Ornamental Details. Most of the sets of
designs have a designer noted at the base of the plate, and these included
noted English architectural draughtsman, engraver, illuminator, and
antiquary Henry Shaw. The designs are preceded by several pages of
discussion concerning the best types of stone to use for monuments.

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 10”x12.5”, iv pages of text plus ix + xii + xxxiii
+ xviii + [iii] + vi + vi + v + iii tinted lithographed plates with facing
descriptive text pages.

CONDITION NOTES: Some soil and light water marks, covers worn.  Please see
the photos.
