(WALL, Bernhardt) VEST, Senator George Graham. MAN'S BEST FRIEND. A PLEA
TO A JURY. New York: Bernhardt Wall, 1920. First Edition. Quarto (8" x
11") bound in gray boards with a red cloth spine and an etched title
laid down on the front cover. The text is the speech made to a Missouri
jury on behalf of a man whose dog had been shot by his neighbor, whom he
was suing for $200. So moved was the jury that they awarded the
plaintiff $500. This famous and eloquent eulogy for a dog served as the
subject matter for Wall's first commercially successful etched book.
Copy #53 of only 125 copies designed and printed by Wall with each of
the 15 pages being an ORIGINAL ETCHING by Wall. SIGNED by the artist on
the title page. Laid in is a scarce four-page advertising brochure from
Wall about the books he published. The front board is pulled away from
the inside joint of Wall's crude binding, contents very nice. Very Good.
According to noted Wall collector Monsignor Francis J. Weber, "Wall
always claimed in his lectures that a dog had occasioned his etching
career. He told audiences that while he was a young man, he frequented
antiquarian book shops. One day, among the musty old shelves of a
downtown store, a shaggy little pooch came bounding along and jumped
into the lap of the proprietor. That touching scene inspired Wall to
recapture the moment artistically." (#011114) $300.00
