THE LADIES OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH ARE ALREADY BEFORE THE PUBLIC, THEY
WOULD RESPECTFULLY STATE THAT ON ACCOUNT THE DISASTROUS FIRE,... They wish
to express their sympathy for the sufferers. Therefore they will give the
entertainment on Thursday as announced, also Friday Evening, June 12 and
13, in the M.P. Church, With additions to the present Programme. One Half
of the proceeds to go to the sufferers, and the remainder to the original
purpose of the entertainment. [Pittsburgh]: Ladies of the Presbyterian
Church, [1845]. Original edition. Broadside, printed in black on green
stock. 9" x 6" Very Good.
Based on internal evidence and research, we have linked this broadside to
the 1845 Pittsburgh Fire. The fire began near the Third Presbyterian Church
and left it in ruins, according to an eyewitness account. It has been
suggested that the "M.P. Church" noted in the broadside refers to the
Methodist Protestant Church on Fifth Avenue, one of the largest
congregations in that denomination at the time. The Great Fire of 1845
burned nearly 1,000 buildings, destroying nearly half of Pittsburgh. [See:
Foster, J. Heron. "A Full Account of the Great Fire at Pittsburgh, on the
Tenth Day of April, 1845; with the Individual Losses, and Contributions for
Relief ." Pittsburgh: J.W. Cook, 1845.] $125.00
