James Alderson: An Account of a Whale of the Spermaceti Tribe, cast on shore on the Yorkshire Coast, on the 28th of April, 1825. [Cambridge: 1826]. A complete paper, extracted from a broken volume of the Transactions of the Cambridge Philosophical Society, bound in burgundy french wraps; 4to (28 x 22 cm); p. 253-266 (14 pages), plus three leaves of plates. Occasional light scattered foxing, a bit of dust-soiling to the top edge, otherwise clean and sound and firmly bound in fresh modern wraps.

A fellow of Pembroke College, Cambridge, at the time of this lecture, the future Sir James Alderson (1794-1882) later gained considerable renown as a physician; he was elected president of College of Physicians in 1867 and named physician extraordinary to Queen Victoria in 1874. "Sir James was a man of many interests… He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and one of the founders of the Hull and East Riding School of Medicine and Anatomy, which opened in 1831. A few years earlier he published an account of his dissection of a huge whale which had been washed ashore at Tunstall…" (Ann Godden: "A Stroll Down Albion Street [Hull] — 1892") .
