I can offer...

[Broadside.] Civil War recruitment broadside, “To the Patriotic Citizen Soldiery of Maine.” Augusta, ME, July 9, 1862. Measures appx. 26 by 9 inches, folded several times, a few tiny spots and one small hole affecting one word; docketed on the verso, “Executive Department, July 4, 1862, State of Maine.” Overall in near-fine condition.

The upper two-thirds reproduces four Executive orders and General Orders with the seal of Maine above each; the lower third is a direct address to the reader: “Your attention is called to the following extracts from the law of this State and of the United States, in full force, authorizing and requiring the employment of the Militia upon occasions like the present.” This latter section cites further requirements for militia duty and points out the bounty and pay available to volunteers which is not available to detached or drafted men, and closes with the following: “…the advantages of entering the service by voluntary enlistment, rather than by being detached or drafted, are most apparent. The adoption of the latter course, for want of volunteers, while it will deprive our citizens of the Government Bounty, premium and advance pay, will also deprive them of the honor of volunteering in this hour of the Nation’s peril, for its defence. No richer legacy than this honor can any man transmit to his children. Delays are dangerous. You must be drafted or detached, if you will not enlist.”

Accompanied by a large partly printed muster roll of Captain George H. Chadwell for Company B in the Twelfth Regiment of Maine Volunteers, commanded by George F. Shipley, called into service at Camp Butler, Cape Elizabeth, Maine, November 15, 1861. Appx. 30.5 by 21 inches, accomplished in manuscript. Worn and split at the center fold, with several minor stains.
