Large folio, appx. 23 by 27 inches, loose sheets laid in a half leather portfolio (spine, corners, flaps and ties renewed), title-page and color key map plus 26 sheets. The PEF was established "for the purpose of investigating the Archaeology, Geography, manners, customs and culture, Geology and Natural History of the Holy Land." The project of mapping Palestine was interrupted several times by fighting. In addition to providing some of the earliest accurate geographical information on Palestine (their work had been preceded by several smaller explorations and surveys starting in 1838), the project also identified Biblical, Talmudic, early Christian, and Crusading locations, data crucial for modern archaeological digs. Subsequent to the founding of the PEF, "scientific investigations in Palestine were carried out with a continuity and a vigour hitherto unknown" (Baker, A History of Geographical Discovery and Exploration, p. 244).
