(SETS) Sale, George and others (eds.). AN UNIVERSAL HISTORY, FROM THE EARLIEST ACCOUNT OF TIME. Compiled from Original Authors; and Illustrated with Maps, Cuts, Notes, &c. With a General Index of the Whole. London: Printed for T. Osborne; A. Millar, and J. Osborn. 1747-1748. 8vo. 20 vols. Index. Illustrated with 36 copper engraved folding maps and 62 copper engraved plates (51 folding), consisting of views, plans, portraits, etc. All 20 vols. uniformly bound in cont. mottled calf, ornately gilt spines with brown calf (title) and black calf (volume) labels. Labels are mostly chipped or entirely lacking. Minor rubbing at hinges, however all the volumes are quite sound. Engraved armorial bookplates on front pastedowns and front free endpapers. 2 leaves of Vol. XIV with a minor tear at the top resulting in a minor loss of a few letters.    $2,000.00 (trade discount allowed)
Note: this is the original set. In 1754 an index, Volume XXI, was published. The set was expanded to 65 volumes starting in 1759 (Vol. XXII) to 1766 (Vol. LXV).
