Every Christmas the Book Elves engage in a (not so)friendly rivalry with
the Ephemera Elves next door. Last year, when the Ephemera Elves party
featured a live partridge in a real pear tree, the Book Elves kept the
neighborhood up most of the night to the sound of twelve drummer
drumming (until the cops showed up). So we knew we were going to see
something special this year when, the week after Thanksgiving, the
neighborhood became suspiciously over-populated with stray french hens
and turtle doves. The Book Elves countered with several flocks of geese,
genetically engineered to only lay eggs precisely on December 25th, at
which point a flock of red and green swans with glowing red noses swam
by.
But before the Book Elves blew the entire party budget hiring Michael
Flately and The Lords of the Dance (who promptly took up with the Radio
City Music Hall Milking Maids the Ephemera elves had hired, throwing the
just-arrived Norte Dame Fife Corps into a deep funk), both sets of elves
finished our latest catalog-
