For Sale: *Eco, Umberto. Il nome della rosa* [*Signed*] [The Name of the
Rose]. Milano: Bompiani, 1980. First edition. A Near Fine copy of the first
edition, first printing (some of the common toning to the pages due to the
type of paper used to produce the book, prior owner's neat gift
presentation to the front free endpaper, some spotting to the rear board),
in a virtually Fine dust jacket (quite light wear, short crease line to the
rear flap's lower left corner), SIGNED BY UMBERTO ECO on the title page.
The copyright page properly states "I edizione settembre 1980" and carries
the "SIAE 1 edizione sticker, numbered 0012974". The dust jacket's rear
flap shows the correct price of "L. 10.000 / IVA compresa". An historical
murder mystery set in Italian monastery in the year 1327 and Eco's debut
novel, the novel combines semiotics, biblical analysis, medieval studies,
and literary theory. [Eco is a semiotician of the first order and a
University Professor, essayist, philosopher, literary critic, and
novelist.] In the story, a Franciscan friar, William of Baskerville, and
his novice Adso of Melk -- who narrates the story, arrive at an Italian
monastery to attend a theological disputation only to find the monastery
disturbed by a recent suicide. A number of other monks then die under
mysterious circumstances and William is asked to conduct an investigation.
The novel provided the basis for the 1986 movie of the same name starring
Sean Connery as William of Baskerville and Christian Slater as Adso of
Melk. Signed copies of the work are quite scarce. A Near Fine copy, SIGNED
BY UMBERTO ECO. SCARCE. Near Fine in near fine dust-jacket. Hardcover.
