“On the Philosophy of Painting: A Theoretical and Practical Treatise”

Published in London by Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans in 1849.

DISCUSSION: “Comprising aesthetics in reference to art, the application 
of the rules to painting, and general considerations on perspective”. 
The author, a well-read prospective artist thwarted in his chosen 
vocation by bad eyesight, turned to the literature of painting as a 
worthy occupation. This study is divided into three parts, covering 
aesthetics, technique, and perspective. In his Preface Twining makes 
clear how important he regards artistic training and good theory to be 
for the fledgling painter, and also notes the importance of learning to 
follow good principles, before being loosed upon an unsuspecting 
artistic community-

“Owing to the remote and indirect nature of the influence which is 
exercised by theory, it is impossible to say what may be its extent, or, 
what art might have been if sound principles of taste had not, from time 
to time, been proclaimed by such men as Winckelmann, Raphael Mengs, and 
Reynolds. Far enough from the true path, has the spirit of innovation, 
vanity, and mannerism, already led the art of painting, in the very 
countries in which it shone with purest lustre. Still more wild and 
eccentric might have been its course, had not a firm and experienced 
hand now and the assisted in leading the way, and pointing out a great 
and useful end”.

This volume was intended as a companion to Twining’s “On the elements of 
picturesque scenery, considered with reference to landscape painting” 
(1846). In 1850 he would also publish “Inquiry into the nature and 
application of perspective and foreshortening”.

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 7.5”x10.5”, xxviii + 443 pages, 23 line figures 
and 11 lithographed plates with tissue guards. Errata slip.

CONDITION NOTES: Publisher’s embossed brown cloth, rebacked. Some cover 
soil and wear. Presentation inscription on the endpaper. Some foxing to 
the plates.
