The Gentleman's Magazine, and Historical Chronicle. Volume XIX [19]. For the Year MDCCXLIX [1749]. London: Printed for Edw. Cave, at St. John's Gate, [1749]. Twelve monthly issues (Jan.-Dec.), plus the supplement, volume title, indices and preface. Tall 8vo (22 cm), untrimmed in early quarter calf and marbled boards; [4] + 600 + [18] pp; with numerous in-text charts and tables, woodcut diagrams and illustrations, musical notation, plus 31 copper-engraved maps and plates, seven of which are folding...

Contents include:
	- Important early material related to NOVA SCOTIA, including: a woodcut Plan of the New Town of Halifax; Account of Nova Scotia from Mr. [Otis] Little, who has been in several parts of the country…; Copy of a Letter from one of the Settlers in Nova Scotia, dated Chebucto Harbour, July 28, 1749; and an Extract of a letter from Chebucto harbour, August 17 ("At our first landing in this harbour, which is the finest I ever saw in the world…"). Interestingly, in a footnote to this last, the editors of the Magazine point out that "The Old England Journal of the 23rd calls the above letter a Whitehall puff,—and wishes that this new colony may not be made a jobb, to fill the purses of some dependents in power."
	- An engraved map of ALGIERS and Parts Adjacent; with a number of related articles, including: An Account of Algiers the warlike, [so-]called by the Turks, its Situation and Fortification, Government, Forces, and Revenue, Political Interest and Conduct; A Letter on the Algerine Affair; Algerine Punishments and naval Forces; woodcut illustrations of Three Galley Vessels, ancient and modern; etc. Also, an Extract of several authentic Letters which relate… the Hardships and Indignities put on his Majesty's Ambassador to the Emperor of MOROCCO; an account of the Money's being delayed, wherewith he was to have redeemed the English Captives, who have endured so many Years Slavery in Barbary.
	- A folding map of SOUTH AMERICA exhibiting Anson's course round Cape Horn (by T. Jefferys).
	- A multi-part Abridgement of A VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD… by GEORGE ANSON (ca. 16 pp. over three issues): Schemes for attacking the Spanish Settlements; the Commodore surprises Payta; Cruises off Acapulco; Steers for Asia, arrives at the Isle of Tinian; Arrives at Macao; Takes the Acapulco Ship, with immense Treasure; Naval Remarks [re.] Variations  of the Compass, Sea Currents, a more commodious Passage to the South Seas, Sea Scurvy, etc. Anson's voyage was one of the most harrowing and dramatic in the history of seafaring. Despite storms, shipwreck, scurvy and other mishaps reducing his squadron of five vessels to a single ship, he succeeded in circumnavigating the globe and capturing the  mother of all treasure ships, Nuestra Señora de Covadonga, to boot.
	- The Capacity of NOAH'S ARK minutely considered; the Beasts taken into the Ark, and the room assign'd them; What Provisions for the carnivorous Animals; Time of Building, Materials and Dimensions of the Ark. An essay accompanied by a folding View and Plan of Noah's Ark and a corresponding table/chart of the various animals' berths. (No first class cabins on this cruise.)
	- A folding Plan of ST. PETERSBURG and Map of the adjacent Country.
	- A plate showing the Habits of the Inhabitants of PERU, their Method of passing Rivers, &c., accompanied by excerpts from An Historical Relation of a Voyage to South America, made… to measure some Degrees for ascertaining the true Figure and Magnitude of the Earth, by Don Antonio Ullos: Of the Method of passing Rivers in Peru; The Bejucos; Baca marina, or the sea-cow; Two remarkable Phenomena seen on the Mountain Pambamarca; Of the Crocodiles in Guayaquil.
	- FIREWORKS: A folding plate depicting Edifices erected for the display of Fireworks on the occasion of the Peace of Utrecht, at Paris, London, Dublin and Worcester (plate with tears at the folds). Additionally, there are a number of articles related to this hot topic, including: Reflexions on Fireworks; Of the Construction of Rockets and other Fireworks; Descriptions of the Fireworks at Paris, at Worcester, on the Thames, in St. James's Park; Costs of the late Fireworks ("Public diversions are the fountain of folly, the snares laid to trap the weak and inconsiderate…"); Effects of the Firework-shows, Jubilees, &c.; On working Sundays on the Fireworks (a poem); etc.

	- An account of the Court-Martial of GEN. SIR JOHN COPE, defeated by Bonnie Prince Charlie at the Battle of Prestonpans (1745) and accused of cowardice. He was exonerated, but not before having been immortalized in the popular Scottish ballad "Hey, Johnnie Cope, are Ye Waking Yet?"
	- Twelve plates of Coats of Arms of the PEERS OF SCOTLAND AND IRELAND.
