August Petermann (editor): Mittheilungen aus Justus Perthes' Geographischer Anstalt über wichtige neue Erforschungen auf dem Gesammtgebiete der Geographie. 1860. [No.] VIII. Gotha: Justus Perthes, 1860. Text in German. Original printed wraps; 4to (28 cm); ca. 40-50 pp. Bumping and creases to the bottom fore-corner, scattered light foxing to the text; mostly unopened (meaning the leaves are still joined at the top edges as issued), hence unread.

With a 24-page account, accompanied by a map outlined in color, of expeditions and discoveries in the Torrens Basin and the interior of southern Australia from 1840-1860, including those of Eyre, Frome, Goyder, Freeling, Babbage, Warburton, Stuart, Gregory, Selwyn, and MacDonnell (Das Torrens-Becken und die umliegenden Landstriche. Ergebnisse der bis zum Jahre 1860 im Innern von Süd-Australien…). Also present is an account and map of P. von Tschichatscheff's travels in Asia Minor.

August Petermann (editor): Mittheilungen aus Justus Perthes' Geographischer Anstalt über wichtige neue Erforschungen auf dem Gesammtgebiete der Geographie. 1861. [Nos.] I [and] V. Gotha: Justus Perthes, 1861. Text in German. Original printed wraps; 4to (28 cm); ca. 40-50 pp. Chipping to the spines, light wear and creases to the edges; one issue with soiling to the wraps and a few page corners, text block coming loose; scattered foxing to the text leaves; light foxing to the map of Sikkim and Nepal; contents largely unopened (meaning the leaves are still joined at the top edges as issued), hence unread.

Two separate issues with material of Australian interest:
	- A folding map accompanying a 20-page extract from John McDouall Stuart's diary of his travels in the interior of Australia (J. MacDouall Stuart's Tagebuch über seine Reise durch das Innere von Australien, 2 März bis 1 Septr. 1860). Stuart (1815-1866) was one of the greatest of Australia's explorers. This is an account of Stuart's fourth expedition, an attempt to find the geographic center of the continent, a journey beset by thirst, scurvy and hostile aborigines.
	- A partially colored map of the "new colony" of Queensland (Queensland, die neue Britische Kolonie in Australien).
	- A partially colored map of Sikkim and Nepal accompanying an 11-page account of British surveying in Kashmir, which also has an in-text map.

One of the leading geographical periodicals of its time, Petermann's geographische Mitteilungen, as it was familiarly known, was begun in 1855 by the renowned cartographer August Heinrich Petermann, who drew most of the maps in the early years himself; he continued to supervise their execution until his death in 1878. Issued monthly, PGM published the reports of explorers, surveyors, geographers, geologists, etc., from all over the world, often accompanied by up-to-date maps. From the beginning, Petermann promised that every issue would contain at least one supplementary map, a tradition that was maintained until the journal ceased publication in 2004.
