BELOW. Booker T. Washington Birthplace, Virginia: Birthplace Memorial,
1948. First Edition. Archive comprises: (1) Booker Washington Birthplace
first-day cover with cabin-scene illustration, four 3-cent stamps with
BTW's portrait, first-day (Feb. 12, 1948) postmark, and signed by Portia
Washington Pittman. (2) BTW's Atlanta Exposition Address, September 1895,
six-page foldout. (3) BTW's Gems of Wisdom, 4pp, with portrait and order
form for memorial half-dollar. (4) In God We Trust, 2pp, re the memorial
coin and showing both sides. Fine.
Portia Washington Pittman, a Wellesley student and the first
African-American graduate of Bradford Academy, taught music and directed
the 600-voice Booker T. Washington High School choir, singing popular songs
and spirituals. $60.00
