HIS DAUGHTER, PORTIA WASHINGTON PITMAN: with two ephemeral items. Booker T.
Washington Birthplace, Virginia: Birthplace Memorial, 1948. First Edition.
Illustration captioned "From Slave Cabin to Hall of Fame."  Contains a
three-cent stamp with the portrait of George Washington Carver, postmarked
"Opening Day Cancellation," Feb. 12, 1948. Addressed to a Minneapolis man,
and signed on a vertical slant by Portia Washington Pitman. In the envelope
are two foldout leaflets: "Atlanta Exposition Address, Delivered by Booker
T. Washington, September, 1895" and "Team Work by Dr. Booker T. Washington,
delivered October 17, 1915."  3.5" x 6.5" Fine.
Portia Washington Pittman, a Wellesley student and the first
African-American graduate of Bradford Academy, taught music and directed
the 600-voice Booker T. Washington High School choir, singing popular songs
and spirituals.  $45.00
