White, Charles and Roy DeCarava and others. NEGRO: U.S.A. -- A Graphic
History of the Negro People in America. With a Foreword by Dr. Herbert
Aptheker. NY: Graphic Workshop, 1949. First Edition. Portfolio, containing
24 [of 26] plates by 14 artists. Issued for the 1949 National Negro History
Week as "Workshop Prints No. 2." The folio plates (14" x 9") are laid into
a pictorial portfolio with cover illustration by Charles White. Includes
the pictorial title-page and a foreword leaf by Herbert Aptheker. The
portfolio is quite chipped at the edges and archivally repaired on the
verso. A few of the plates are lightly sunned at the edges, and one of the
Krueger plates is chipped at the edge. Lacking two of the 26 plates (one by
Jacob Lawrence, one by Leona Pierce). 14.25" x 9.5" Very Good. Pictorial
Paper Covers.
The 24 plates present are: Slave Auction & Comrade by Leonard Baskin;
Together We'll Win by Roy DeCarava; United Labor & Dollar Liberty &
Plantation & Slave Ship by Antonio Frasconi; The Standard Bearer by Robert
Gwathmey; Disciples of John Brown by Bud Handelsman; The Artisan and the
Governor of Virginia by Charles Keller; Terror of the Klan & Enslavement by
Louise Krueger; Nat Turner & Runaway Slave by Jacob Landau; Reconstruction
Legislator by Al Lass; Race Riot & Negroes in the Civil War by Jerry
Martin; Tenement & Migration North by Leona Pierce; Frederick Douglass,
Teacher & First to Fall by Jim Schlecker; Peter Salem at Bunker Hill by
Edward Walsh; Negro U.S.A. & Our War by Charles White. ~~ Although one
would wish that they were printed on better paper, this is a striking
portfolio of prints from the short-lived but influential Graphic Workshop.
[WorldCat locates only four holdings: LC, MOMA, NYPL, and U Michigan.]
