COMMUNITY, RD 1, GLEN MILLS, PA. Delaware County, PA: Tanguy Homesteads,
1947. First Edition. 8pp, oblong octavo; folded map laid in.  In part: "In
February, 1941, a group of like-minded individuals founded a cooperative
housing association and purchased a hundred acre farm on which to establish
Tanguy Homesteads, a cooperative community. The farm is subdivided into
forty 'two-acre' homesites, with the balance of the area taken up by the
pond, roads and community grounds....It is a Rochedale Cooperative...."  6"

This post-WWII plannned community was sited 20 miles west of Philadelphia,
a mile and a half from Cheyney State Teachers College. The community was
founded on five principles, the main one being Open Membership without
discrimination regarding race, creed or nationality. The laid-in, folded
map shows the site design by A. Martin Funnell, Landscape Architect.
Considered a modern American commune, Tanguy Homesteads' low-cost housing
on two-acre lots with central community facilities, attracted Quaker
pacifists and other conscientious objectors to the Chester County hills. A
rare prospectus [OCLC locates only the Temple U holding, not mentioning our
