On this day in 1692 the first "witch" was hanged in Salem.  We offer the 
best-known novel of that period.

HAWTHORNE, Nathaniel. THE SCARLET LETTER, A ROMANCE. Boston: Ticknor, 
Reed, and Fields, 1850. Second Edition. Original brown cloth. BAL 7601: 
First Printing; inserted catalog dated October 1, 1849. Clark A16.2: 
2,500 copies. Contains the first appearance of Hawthorne's Preface to 
his most famous work. Lightly inked name of C. H. Smith at top of title 
page and lightly pencilled name of H. D. Hull on the front endpaper. 
Contents generally quite clean, front hinge partly cracked but cover 
tight; light edgewear mostly to the spine tips and a small, faint stain
