TITLE: “Landscapes Clear and Radiant: The Art of Wang Hui (1632-1717)”
By Wen C. Fong, Chin-Sung Chang & Maxwell K. Hearn.
Published in New York by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2008.
DISCUSSION: This comprehensive study of the painter is the first
publication in English and accompanies The Metropolitan Museum of Art's
exhibition Landscapes Clear and Radiant: The Art of Wang Hui
(1632-1717). Wang Hui, the most celebrated painter of late
seventeenth-century China, played a key role in both reinvigorating past
traditions of landscape painting and in establishing the stylistic
foundations for imperially sponsored art of the Qing court. Drawing upon
his extraordinary talent and immense ambition, Wan developed an
all-embracing synthesis of historical landscape styles that soon became
one of the greatest artistic innovations of late imperial China. Wan
Hui's genius lay in "repossessing the past" while making works that were
distinctly his own. He has been unrivaled since.
