xxvi, 406 pages, black and white plates. Near fine.
          Comprehensive survey of the engraved likenesses of George 
Washington, which took five years to complete. Many are reproduced in 
full page facsimile. The frontispiece is a mezzotint engraved specially 
for this volume by S. Arlent Edwards after an original oil painting from 
1798 or 1799, thus immediately creating an engraving not described in 
the catalogue! Published by the Grolier Club in an edition of only 425 
copies. HOWES #H257. Bound in slate blue paper over boards with vellum 
spine and corner tips, gilt-stamped spine and boards, tissue-guarded 
frontispiece and plates, deckle fore and bottom edges. Binding shows 
mild rubs and shallow bumps at extremities, slight soil to
