[Thomas Alexander Boswell:] The Journal of an Exile. London: Saunders and Otley, 1825. FIRST EDITION. Two volumes, small 8vo (19 cm), in early/period half calf and marbled boards.

An uncommon novel, especially so in the first edition; not in Sadleir or Wolff. Wear and rubbing to the bindings; two page-gatherings sprung and protruding slightly from the text blocks, but secure; scattered spotting and stains to the leaves.

The Gothic-ish wanderings of a love-crossed Byronic hero in the south of France, purportedly transcribed from the dead man's diaries. The enthusiastic reviewer of La Belle Assemblee (May, 1825) found the work "entitled to much praise," and that "the respective narratives [of the dead man and the traveller who finds his journal], interestingly combining truth with fiction, are distinguished by forcible description, and affecting pathos, rarely surpassed." Of the author little is known, but he did publish one other novel, Recollections of a Pedestrian, in the following year.
