[Pierre François Felix Joseph Giraud:] Beautes de l'Histoire d'Amerique, d'apres les plus celebres voyageurs et geographes qui ont ecrit sur cette partie du monde. Paris: Libraire d'Education d'Alexis Eymery, 1816. FIRST EDITION. Volume I (of 2) only; small 8vo (17.5 cm) in full calf richly tooled in gilt, gilt-lettered morocco spine labels, page edges gilt; 312 pp.; with the half-title, engraved title-page and frontispiece, plus twelve engraved plates on six leaves.

Volume one of two only, but complete in itself, dealing primarily with North America, charmingly illustrated with copper-engraved plates depicting indigenous and ethnic types, including a Quaker. After an introductory section on the explorations and discoveries of Columbus, Vespucci, Cabot, Cartier, Hudson, Capt. Cook and others, there follow chapters on the Esquimaux, Greenland, Acadia (Acadie), Nova Scotia (Acadiens de la Nouvelle Ecosse), Canada, Nootka, the United States, California, Florida, and Mexico. Binding with some wear and rubbing to the extremities, occasional light spotting to the plates and text; otherwise clean and crisp in a handsome calf binding.
