First edition of the author's first book. 300pp. Orig. blind stamped brown cloth, pictorial spine stamped in gilt. A presentation copy, signed by Helper, "...with the Compliments of The Author, New York, Oct 7th 1856." Minor foxing of outer leaves, otherwise about fine.    $450.00 (trade discount allowed)
Helper (1829-1909), in addition to debunking the myth of California, went on to become a major writer in the anti-slavery movement. He opposed the institution of slavery, but was a true bigot who wanted to see all black people returned to Africa.
