The Gentleman's Magazine: or, Monthly Intelligencer. For the Year 1734. Vol. IV. London: Printed and sold at St. John's Gate, by F. Jefferies in Ludgate-street, [1734]. Twelve monthly issues (Jan.-Dec.), plus the supplement, indices, volume title-page and preface. Thick 8vo in early/period boards and vellum spine, the spine with the volume title and year written in an early hand (and misspelled "Maggazine"); 748 + [16] pp. (erratic pagination); in-text tables, woodcut decorations and illustrations.

An early volume of this mighty organ of the Age of Enlightenment, the first and longest-running "magazine" in the modern sense, which began publication in 1731.

Notable and/or curious features include:

- POETRY by Alexander Pope, Colley Cibber, Jonathan Swift, Elizabeth Carter, and others.
- Several items related to the the COLONY OF GEORGIA, founded two years before (1732), including:
	- An account of the visit of Tomo Chachi and "other Cherokee [Yamacraw] Indians brought over by Mr. Oglethorpe from Georgia" to the court of George II ("The War Captain and other Attendants…were very importunate to appear at Court in the Manner they go in their own Country, which is only with a proper Covering around their Waste, the rest of their Body being naked, but were dissuaded from it by Mr. Oglethorpe…").
	- A poem: "To the honourable James Oglethorpe, Esq., On his Return from Georgia" ("Hail happy clime! whose plains no armies vex, / Nor purple gore with thy rivers mix… / Hail Oglethorpe! with nobler trophies crown'd, / Than ever were in camps or sieges found…").
- Proceedings of the Assemblies in NEW-ENGLAND.
- On the State of the Colonies in AMERICA.
- A woodcut MAP OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM (extending as far as Saturn and its satellites), as well as four prize-winning poems "On Astronomy."
- Story of a boiled Exciseman.
- The Character of a Trimmer.
- Beaus and Coquets, merrily describ'd.

Binding rubbed, bumped and worn at the corners; the volume title-page and preface bound in before the Supplement; lacking four leaves of text (pp. 271-2, 327-8, 395-96, 445-46); several leaves coming loose at the gutter with resulting browning and wear to the fore-edges; text block with occasional mild browing; otherwise quite clean and sound, complete as per contents noted above. Front paste-down with the engraved armorial bookplate of J. Comyns, Wood [Devon].
