MELVILLE, Herman. BATTLE PIECES. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1866.
First Edition. Original brown cloth, 272 pages. BAL 13673. Melville's
uncommon volume of poetry on the Civil War. One of only 1250 copies.
With the misprint on the copyright page which appears to be in all
copies of the first edition. Minor stains to covers, most noticeably to
lower right front where some of the smoothness of the cloth is lacking.
The dark endpapers are present, but there are remnants only of the two
free flyleaves, which do not figure into the signature count and which
were originally between the dark endpaper and the title page. Trivial
foxing. Above average copy, Near Fine but for the missing blank
flyleaves. (#002284) $1,000.00
