Barnes, Ella A. LOGBOOK OF THE SCHOONER ELLA H. BARNES, N.H. [New Haven]
CT., MAY 31, 1879 - JUNE 16, 1879. New Haven, CT, 1879. Original
manuscript. 13-1/2pp, written tightly and neatly in pencil. "Written on the
Ella H. Barnes {Capt. & Mrs. Avery - Etta Avery - Ella A. Barnes, Mate -
Mr. Hughson, Sailor - Charlie and Hugh, Steward. Saturday, May 31 - Started
from house 8 A.M....Delayed a few moments at the bridge by logs lying
across the draw....4 P.M. Anchored this side of the light on account of
wind and tide....The steam tug Vim gave us one of her unearthly salutes, to
which I responded with a full blast....Sunday 10 A.M. set sail for New
York....The pleasure steamer J.B. Schuyler passed us in the
Sound....spanking breeze...very enjoyable sail....Monday, June 2...Steamer
Meta-Americus passed us....Anchored off Riker's Is....Started with the tug
Wm. F. Burden for Hell Gate...Passed Blackwell Is. Light....Anchored off
Red Hook....Thunder, lightning, rain at 9 P.M. Tuesday, June 3....were
rowed across to the Brooklyn shore, cost 3 cents. Ferry across to New York,
cost 20 cents....Took the cars...stopped at 48th Street....[Tells who they
saw, where they stayed, &c.] Wednesday...started for the Ferry on the
Elevated Railway.... The boat was called by the Capt's whistle to take us
on board the Schr. Hauled up the anchor and got under way about 1
P.M....Now we are on the Atlantic Ocean....Thursday, June 5. Head wind and
the Schr. rolling heavily.... [The log details each day; following are some
phrases from the text.] "Started up the Potomac River"; "Now opposite Upper
Cedar Point"; "...horse cars took us directly to the Capitol" [provides
many details of the Capitol's size, materials, cost, the Senate chamber,
Corcoran Art Gallery, etc.]; "Took the cars for Georgetown"; "Tuesday, June
10. Tug started with us at 5 A.M....16 miles down the river"; "Watched an
ugly looking squall coming up"; "Left the Potomac River, and started down
the Chesapeake Bay"; "Opposite the Rappahannock River"; "...started out on
the wide Ocean once more"; "...rolling and pitching...sails and rigging
adding all the noise"; "Half way from the Chesapeake Bay to the Delaware
Bay"; "...opposite Cape Henlopen. Little or no wind"; "this evening we were
opposite Atlantic City, N.J."; "...close in shore at Long Branch";
"...entered N.Y. Bay about 9 A.M. Capt. A. caught a blue fish early this
morning, and we had it for breakfast"; "...quite a heavy squall while we
were in the Sound"; "Run ashore during the night [fog] on the Shoal Ground,
just outside of New Haven Light"; "Went in to Belle Dock"; "...took the
horse cars for home"; &c.  Bound in homemade tan wrappers, 8.25" x 5" Very
