Wilberforce, William (1759-1833). ...PROCEEDINGS OF THE HOUSE UPON MR.
WILBERFORCE'S MOTION ON THE SLAVE TRADE: In "The Senator, or, Clarendon's
Parliamentary Chronicle : containing a weekly register, recording, with the
strictest impartiality, and utmost accuracy, the proceedings and debates of
the Houses of Lords and Commons ...." London: C. Cooke and H.D. Symonds,
1792. First Edition. Dated under the engraved portrait of Dr, Thomas,
Bishop of Rochester. pp: 561-608, text complete. The text begins: "An
opinion, Mr. Wilberforce observed, had gone forth into the world, that the
Slave Trade must be continued for the safety of our West India Islands...."
 Original printed, pink wrappers. "Mr. Smith" is written and crossed out at
the top of the cover. Above the portrait plate is the inked signature
"=John Pemberton's." Inside the cover is stamped: "Pendle Hill Library--A
permanent loan from the representative meeting of Philadelphia Yearly
Meeting." Some wear to spine and edges. 9" x 5.75" Good . Original Wrappers.
John Pemberton (1727-1795), the former owner of this volume who signed his
name herein, was a Philadelphia Quaker who led an interesting life as
recorded by William Hodgson in his book, THE LIFE AND TRAVELS OF JOHN
PEMBERTON. William Wilberforce led the cause for abolition of the slave
trade in 18th-century England.   $200.00
