GARLAND, Hamlin. A SON OF THE MIDDLE BORDER. New York: The Macmillan
Company, 1917. Reprint. Decorated cloth. Illustrated by Alice Barber
Stephens. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Garland to Albert Bigelow Paine, "the
biographer of Mr./O possum and Mr./B. Crow, and others./From his
admiring/friend- and family./H. Garland/Jan. 1918./The year of the/End
of the great war." There are also a handful of notes and corrections to
the text (including the spelling of Paine's name on p. 419!) presumably
in Garland or Paine's hand. Laid in are two 4-1/2" x 6-1/2" original
photographs--one a fine portrait of Garland and the other of Garland's
Wisconsin residence--each INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Garland to Paine.
Wonderful association material of two significant turn-of-the-century
literary figures, both of whom used the American West as subject
material. Paine, of course, is known also as Mark Twain's biographer.
Both hinges cracked and repaired. Good copy with a great association.
