WOOLMAN, John. THE WORKS OF JOHN WOOLMAN IN TWO PARTS. Philadelphia:
Joseph Crukshank, 1775. Second Edition. First published the previous
year. Bound in contemporary calf leather with a paper spine label; xiv,
[ii], 432 pages. In addition to his JOURNAL, this also includes SOME
CONSIDERATIONS ON THE KEEPING OF NEGROES, first published in 1754. Evans
13782. Howes W-669 "aa": "An autobiographical masterpiece, rivalled in
18th century America only by that of Franklin." Woolman was one of the
first Americans to campaign for the abolition of slavery. Both endpapers
are detached but present. The ownership signature of Micajah Speakman
dated 1776 is on the title page with a modern owner inscription in the
blank space above the imprint. Speakman's bookplate is on the front
pastedown. Binding is a little rubbed but quite nice. Text is lightly to
moderately browned throughout. A Very Good copy of an important work.
