FACSIMILE REPRINT; first edition, 1824. “The most telling feature of The Art of Drawing on Stone is the way in which it was uncompromisingly addressed solely to artists as potential lithographic draughtsmen.” From Friedman’s Introduction. Hullmandel was one of the most important figures in the development of British lithography in the first half of the nineteenth century. He developed a method for reproducing gradations in tones and for creating the effect of soft color washes, which enabled the printed reproduction of Romantic landscape paintings.
