[Thomas D'Urfey:] The Weesils. A Satyrical Fable: Giving an Account of some Argumental Passages happening in the Lion’s Court about Weesilion’s taking the Oaths. London: [s.n.], Printed in the Year 1691. FIRST EDITION. Terminal leaf ("Postscript") in the first state described by ESTC. Slim 4to in modern marbled boards and vellum spine (the spine title incorrectly attributing authorship to Thomas Brown); [2] + 12 + [2] pp. ESTC R7901; Wing D2790B.

Untrimmed with irregular edges, marginal wear and soiling, first and last leaves a bit browned. A satire in dramatic verse by Thomas D'Urfey (1653-1723), prolific late-Restoration writer of songs, boisterous farces and bombastic melodramas. He and his works remained popular through four reigns, and he was friendly with Charles II and James II, Addison, Steele, Henry Purcell, and other luminaries. The subject of D'Urfey's satire is William Sherlock, a waffling church leader and prebendary of St. Paul's who at first refused to take the oaths of loyalty to William and Mary, then reversed himself when threatened with the loss of his position.
