JAMES, William. IS LIFE WORTH LIVING? Philadelphia: S. Burns Weston,
1896. First Edition. A small (4-1/8" x 6-3/8"), slim (63 pages) volume
bound in brown flexible cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover. An
address originally given before the Young Men's Christian Association of
Harvard University in May of 1895 and later given at the Society for
Ethical Culture of Philadelphia. SIGNED by the author on a front blank:
"Wm James/Harvard University/Jan. 7, 1897." Books signed by this great
American psychologist and philosopher are excessively scarce. Name of
Harvard Philosophy Professor George V. Dearborn, dated December 1896, on
the front endpaper. Some darkening to the pastedowns from the glue used.
Light rubbing to the spine edges. Near Fine, lacking the dustwrapper, if
it ever had one.
William James, brother of the noted novelist Henry James, Jr., is
generally considered to be, along with Emerson, the greatest philosophic
American mind. He is best known for his book VARIETIES OF RELIGIOUS
EXPERIENCE and his theory of Pragmatism, an advanced philosophy based on
the doctrine that truth is based on experience and observation.
