Largus, Scribonius; Rhodius, Joannes. Compositiones Medicae Notis Illustravit, Lexicon Scribonianum Adiecit. Frambotti, Paulu, Padua 1655. 4to. pp. [xvi], 144, 465, [XX] + 2 plates (full and partial page engravings within pagination).

Contemporary vellum boards, light soiling, title is written in ink on spine and there is corner wear and bumping. There are signs of worm holes on the inside marbled endpapers with a couple tiny holes on the exterior. The owners name is written in script on the title page, with "No 8" on the opposite page. There is a tab on the index page with very slight tearing due to use. A few minor spots throughout but all small and none hindering the text. There is a light embossed stamp on the title page that is not firm enough to be legible.

This book was written by Scribonium Largus, physician to Emperor Claudian, and was first published in 1529. It contains a collection of medical prescriptions and instruments and the instruction for dealing with a variety of injuries - mostly battle wounds. This book is notable for containing the earliest reference to the Hippocratic Oath. Though used and referenced many times, this particular edition by Joannes Rhodium adds substantial notes and indexes. WorldCat shows 5 libraries with this edition.
