[Karl Theodor Anton Maria von Dalberg:] Essai sur la Science. [Leipzig? or Erfurt?:] MDCCXCVI [1796]. First edition, 4to (22 cm), in early/original boards; [2], 14 pp. Wear and chipping to the spine and edges, light staining to the boards; some cockling/puckering and faint staining to the leaves, but generally very bright and crisp, firmly bound.

Exceedingly uncommon scientific and metaphysical treatise listing ten essential principles and the "practical truths" that result from those principles. A search of the various library databases turns up only one copy, in the Österreichischer Bibliothekenverbund. The anonymous author, Karl von Dalberg (1744-1817) was, at various times, Archbishop of Mainz, Arch-Chancellor of the Holy Roman Empire, Statthalter of Erfurt, Prince of Regensburg, Bishop of Konstanz, Prince-Bishop of Worms, Prince-Primate of the Confederation of the Rhine, and Grand Duke of Frankfurt. In addition to his religious and political duties, he was a keen amateur natural philosopher, writing a number of scientific tracts, and was a friend and patron of Schiller, Goethe and Herder.
