China, Shanghai. GETTING UNDER WAY FOR SHANGHAI [broadside], New York, June
23d, 1891 By Thomas A. Hine. NY: Published by the author, 1891. First
Edition. Broadside, text and six gravure photo-illustrations. Printed on
heavy stock. Type is a little faint, still quite legible; photos are sharp
with good contrast. 13.25" x 9.25" Very Good.
The six photos are captioned: The Captain; Catting the Anchor; Setting Main
Stay-sail; Looking Aft from Forecastle; Setting the Main Royal; Man at the
Wheel. The ship shown and described is The Governor Goodwin. A New York
Times article of April 9, 1899, notes that she was "...one of the most
handsome vessels flying American colors...denoting great speed and the very
embodiment of a smart ship...." The article details a recent trip out of
Hong Kong to New York, outrunning a typhoon that had damaged the USS
Juniata. The NY Times piece notes that in 1889, Capt. Pray out of
Portsmouth captained the Goodwin with a crew of 22 men. The ship was owned
by M.F. Pickering of New York. ~~ On this broadside, Hine gives details of
the ship and crew members, and writes about the imminent voyage from New
York to Shanghai, commenting on a shipboard visit with Captain Sam, "...It
was in the Gov. Goodwin about two years ago that Capt. Sam made the
quickest trip from the Equator to New York that has been made for forty
years...." $100.00
