William Maver: Johnson's English Dictionary: To which is Annexed, the Pronunciation, according to the Present Practice of the Best Orators and Orthöepists; With an Appendix, containing Several Thousand Words omitted by Dr. Johnson…; A Chronological Table of Remarkable Events, Discoveries, and Inventions; A List of Men of Learning and Genius; The Whole of the Scripture Proper Names, and an Epitome of the Heathen Mythology…; A Table of Precedency, with directions for addressing persons of every rank, &c. &c. Glasgow: Printed by B. Chapman, for William Maver, bookseller, Glasgow;—and James Robertson, bookseller, Edinburgh, 1809. FIRST EDITION. Two volumes bound in one; thick 8vo (22.5 cm) in recent quarter morocco over linen-covered boards; l, [4], 500 pp.; [2], 463, [1] pp.; [2], ii, 118, [2] pp. (appendix with separate title-page and pagination).

An uncommon updating of Johnson's dictionary by this Glaswegian bookseller, auctioneer, publisher and amateur lexicographer (and, according to the Annals of Glasgow, longtime Secretary of the Glasgow Annuity Society, whose object "is to secure a fund for the support of its members in advanced age"). Darkening and dust-soiling to the edges of the text block; early owner's signature on the title-page; intermittent browning to the leaves with occasional spots and stains, a few corners bumped and creased, but overall a sound, solid copy in a fresh, attractive modern binding.
