Colleagues,

We are pleased to offer:

Gribble, Fred C. PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF 215 ORIGINAL IMAGES OF SEATTLE, THE
UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON (INCLUDING DKE HOUSE), WASHINGTON-DC, AND OTEEN,
NORTH CAROLINA, 1920-1925: Documenting Gribble's life from U Washington to
a TB Sanatorium. Original photograph album. Album of black leather over
flexible boards (7" x 11.5"), containing heavy black leaves to which are
affixed 215-230 original photographs of various sizes + postcards and
clippings, all neatly labeled in white ink; tissue guards. Very Good. Full
Leather.
Fred Gribble of Seattle (Class of 1924, University of Washington) opens his
album with shots of his family: mother, father (F.M. Gribble), sister
Bernice, brother Ernest C., sister-in-law Gladys, and nephew Tilford.
Elsewhere are two photos of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Cavender.
He then pastes in 2 bird’s eye views (not original) of University of
Washington, and 8 labeled photos (postcards?) of campus buildings. These
are followed by two large professional photos, one of “Deke House”
(exterior), the other of the fraternity brothers, all labeled, including
Fred Gribble, and dated 1921. There are, in all, about 58 photos of DKE
(the “Kappa Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon”), virtually all
labeled, including shots of “”Neophites” [sic], including Fred, “Deke
Mothers”, Fred “during initiation,” and various girls. In addition to their
names, many students, both male and female, have “OOO” and a class year
neatly written in ink on their chests. The DKE shots include a large photo
of “DEKE ‘24’s House Party, American Lake, June” (1921) and accompanying
snaps of various boys and girls (labeled) in canoes, bathing costumes, “the
ole swimmin’ hole”, as well as shots of American Lake and Cameron Lodge.
Fred appears with Ruth Price. ~~ The next section, labeled “Left Seattle
for Washington DC, October 27, 1921”, includes large magazine photos of the
city and Mt. Vernon, and postcard (?) views of many of the famous
buildings. There are also 16 mini-views (not original). More family photos
follow, including “Home,” and “5201 16th St.” (presumably in Seattle), and
“Bert Cassels, USN Seattle” (in uniform) and then a series including
several taken in Omaha, including the house at “433 So. 39th St.” The next
8 pages (clipped from various sources) are of “Jean Tolley, New York”, and
a few more DKE snapshots. ~~ Most of the rest of the album is devoted to
photos taken at Oteen, NC (part of Asheville), where there is
“U.S.V[eterans] Hospital #60”. At this point in its history, the Hospital
seems to house patients of all types, probably mostly tubercular, and
including both men and women. Oteen pictures are dated 1922-25, and include
shots of various buildings and sites: “Hemorrhage Hill” “Nurses’ Barracks”,
“Hostess House” “Ward E”, “N-3”,etc, as well as the natural surroundings:
“French Broad River”, “Land of the Sky”, etc. Most of the photos, however,
are labeled shots of hospital inmates, sometimes garbed in pajamas and
robes, including Fred Gribble himself, who apparently was an inhabitant of
Ward E. There is a shot of two “Tuberculosis Gooks” (labeled Wilson and
Allen), Fred himself with a lady named “Tini”, one of Fred (?) labeled
“T.B.”, a shot of Mamie Herndon of Durham, NC, with the addition “died
3-5-25”, a shot of 4 young men, each autographed in ink on the photo, with
“to our beloved Eric” written in the margin, and a shot of a young girl
labeled “on the cure”. Fred seems to have acquired the nickname “Gus” at
Oteen, and appears in several group photos so named. Scattered throughout
the Oteen years are more labeled shots of friends and family from Seattle
and other places. $450.00
