*CALDERON, Edmundo. /LACANDONES Diez Dibujos de Edmundo Calderon./*
Citlalli (publisher), Toluca, Mexico. 1967. 1st and only printing. A
stiff card folio of ten large prints, with introduction written by Paul
Westheim..

Calderon was a Mexican artist from Toluca. In 1963 he visited the
publisher and art critic Paul Westheim in Mexico City, and showed him
ten charcoal drawings of the Lacandon tribe of the Maya people, which he
had drawn seven years earlier during a visit to the ancient Maya
archeological site of Bonampak, in the Mexican state of Chiapas. He was
an artist member of a private expedition organized in cooperation with
the Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History. The ten
reproductions of the original charcoal drawings in this portfolio are
all signed in the plate and each measures 42 x 32 cm. on stiff card. The
text is in Spanish and English, and the subject of each plate is
identified. Only 300 copies of this portfolio were produced - our copy
is designated no. 151. The stiff card folder shows wear and some
soiling. The text pages are somewhat thumbed at the corners. The last
six (of eleven) pages show a faint tide mark across the bottom margin,
which is more pronounced on the inside flaps of the folder. There is a
minuscule amount of staining to the bottom margin of plates 4, 6, 7, and
9. All plates show minor wear to the edges from handling.
