Captain Basil Hall: Schloss Hainfeld; or, A Winter in Lower Styria. Edinburgh: Robert Cadell [and] London: Whittaker and Co., 1836. FIRST EDITION; 8vo (19.5 cm) in early/period half calf and patterned boards; [4], 2, [2], 348 pp.

PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Hall on the half-title page: "Mrs. B. Poller[?] From her Affectionate Brother, the Author." Basil Hall (1788-1844) was a Scottish-born Royal Navy officer, explorer, and author of a number of popular works of travel and exploration, including Account of a Voyage of Discovery to the West Coast of Corea and the Great Loo-Choo Islands (1818), Extracts from a Journal Written on the Coasts of Chile, Peru and Mexico (1823), and Fragments of Voyages and Travels (1831-1840). The present volume was adapted by Hall from journals he kept while traveling on the Continent, in particular, Styria, near Graz, in what is modern-day Austria and Slovenia.

Binding with some rubbing, bumping to the corners, small chip to the spine label; front hinge professionally repaired; corner missing from the front (blank) endpaper; text block modestly toned and darkened at the edges; five leaves with staining, possibly from a flower or plant having been laid in; a few occasional small spots and stains elsewhere; otherwise clean and sound, firmly bound. Correction in ink on one page (see photo above), possibly in the author's hand.
