Two volumes in one; small 8vo (18 cm) bound in later, but not recent, full navy blue morocco, spine tooled in gilt; [2],206,189-202,[2],223-412 p. (erratic pagination, as called for); [2],285,[1] p. Early (second) editions of all three parts of Samuel Butler's classic verse satire, one of the most popular and often reprinted works of the eighteenth century. Modest rubbing and soiling to the binding with some bumping and wear to the extremities; vol. I title-page soiled and laid down; lacking the blank leaf between parts 1 and 2; some browning and occasional light damp-stains to vol. I; early/original owner's manuscript additions/corrections to title-page and one page of the text; otherwise quite clean and sound, firmly bound.
